Research performed by the American College of Cardiology shows that cardiovascular diseases like heart disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease cause one-third of deaths around the world.

The study reviewed the deaths of every country around the globe over the past 25 years.

The countries with the highest rates of cardiovascular deaths were in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, Southern Africa and South America. Although the United States, Canada, Japan and Western Europe experienced lower rates of cardiovascular death over the last 25 years, these decreasing rates have begun to slow down and plateau, according to the ACC.

American and Dutch scientists have found that stripes trigger migraines in some patients. The study is the first of its kind to link a pattern to the condition.

And it's not just stripes on clothing that can cause migraine symptoms, according to the study - stripes on animals like the zebra, stripes in art or architecture, and even bar codes were also proven to cause head pain for some study participants. Other individuals experienced migraines triggered by the seemingly innocuous striped patterns of awnings, lawn chairs and radiators.

Dr. Budler often talks to patients with migraines who report the symptoms of rhinitis along with migraine pain.

Back injuries are common in sports. Take German Grand Prix driver Pascal Wehrlein, who suffered a fractured vertebra during a crash in Monaco this May. Slipped disks, strains and sprains can leave players on the bench, but another common back injury for athletes is spinal compression fractures.

What Are Spinal Compression Fractures?

Compression fractures are fractures that occur when there is a compression force on the vertebrae of the back. When a compression fracture occurs, the affected vertebrae collapse due to the force exerted on them. In most compression fractures, the front part of the bone collapses, leaving the vertebrae a wedge shape.

Many women experience a painful condition known as pelvic congestion syndrome as a side effect of pregnancy. This condition - and a medical treatment known as coil embolization - recently made the news when featured in the UK's Daily Mail. Tiny coils inserted into the neck are proving to be an effective treatment for women with pelvic congestion syndrome. These coils seal off damaged veins to improve circulation, reduce pain and lower the risk of life-threatening complications of varicose veins in the ovaries.

When you feel a migraine coming on, do you immediately reach for a pain reliever? Did you know that relying too much on pain medicine can actually mean more headaches? Rebound headaches happen when you stop taking your migraine pain relievers for a few days and your body goes through withdrawal symptoms. Dr. Budler offers an alternative to pain relievers called the SPG block procedure to give people with migraines long-lasting relief without the risk of rebound headaches.

Cincinnati Reds fans anxiously waited for good news about star pitcher Anthony "Disco" Desclafani’s elbow after the pitcher reported forearm soreness.

Desclafani’s elbow was especially concerning to Reds fans. The pitcher just left a rehab stint with the Dayton Dragons for a partially torn UCL that has kept him from pitching this season. Fans sighed with relief when the problem with Desclafani’s arm was declared unrelated to his torn UCL, but instead was deemed to be a less serious diagnosis of tendonitis.

Calcium is one the most abundant minerals in your body, and one of the most important, too. It strengthens bones and teeth and helps prevent bone diseases like osteoporosis and osteopenia. Calcium is so critical to bone health that Dr. Budler encourages patients to eat a calcium-rich diet in order to meet the recommended dietary guidelines of 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams per day.

It is important to take steps now to prevent osteoporosis and protect your bone health. Dr. Budler treats patients with spinal compression fractures that develop as a complication of osteoporosis with kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive spinal repair procedure.

A new editorial published in the British Journal of Medicine suggests that foods high in cholesterol and saturated fat are not major contributors to heart disease, but instead inflammation is the key factor behind cardiovascular conditions.

The authors of the editorial are three cardiologists from the United States,England and Switzerland. In their essay, the doctors argue that heart disease education should be shifted away from the traditional teachings of instructing patients to eat a low-fat diet and reducing LDL cholesterol numbers to finding the cause of inflammation in the body and reducing it.

Ten percent of the population suffer from plantar fasciitis, according to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society can be caused by over pronation. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain and for many individuals means painful standing or walking. This painful foot condition happens when the fascia band, the ligament that connects the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed. Inflammation usually occurs when individuals have either flat feet or very high arches, wear unsupportive shoes or shoes that do not fit properly or are on their feet for extended periods of time. Another common cause of plantar fasciitis is a condition known as excessive pronation.

b2ap3_thumbnail_leg-cramp.jpgMost people experience leg muscle cramps one time or another in their lifetime. Frequently cited causes of leg cramps include muscle fatigue caused by overuse, dehydration or potassium deficiency. While leg cramps are usually not very serious, sometimes they are an indication of a more serious health threat, such as like poor circulation.

The cramping of muscles caused by poor circulation to the legs is called claudication. In the majority of claudication sufferers, these cramps usually occur intermittently while walking or other physical activity, and stop during periods of rest. Patients with severe claudication can also experience cramps during periods of rest, as well.

b2ap3_thumbnail_shutterstock_529004896.jpgDo your migraines interfere with work? If you suffer from migraines, you know that they can strike at any time, including during your work day. The pain caused by migraines makes it hard to focus and function in the office. Advanced Radiology offers patients some tips to cope when migraines come on at work.

Know Your Triggers. One of the best ways you can reduce the chance of developing a migraine at work is to remove triggers from your office space. Since bright lights kick off migraines for some individuals, replacing fluorescent lighting and using an anti-glare screen on your computer or other screens helps to minimize their migraines.

Other people are triggered by certain smells, like perfumes and cigarette smoke. Many companies are moving to entirely non-smoking workplaces and also asking employees to not wear perfumes or colognes to the office because of smell-sensitive coworkers.
